After-hours home euthanasia

Decline doesn't keep business hours. When the bad night arrives on a Sunday, or at 9 pm, after-hours home-visit vets exist for exactly this. Here's how it works and what it costs.

Updated August 2026

What counts as after hours

Most home-visit vets treat weekday evenings (typically after 5 or 6 pm), weekends and public holidays as after-hours. Coverage varies: many end-of-life services run until 10 or 11 pm seven days, a few offer genuine overnight visits, and almost all prioritise end-of-life calls above everything else on the book.

Not sure what to do next?

We'll match you with a home visit vet who covers your area and email you their introduction. Reply to it and they'll call you. There’s no cost to ask, and no obligation.

What the surcharge looks like

Expect $100 to $300 on top of the standard visit fee, with public holidays and the small hours at the top of that range. A weekday-evening visit often adds the least; a 2 am public-holiday visit the most. The base numbers city by city are in the cost guide.

Tonight, or tomorrow morning?

The honest question vets help callers weigh: is your pet suffering in a way that can't be made comfortable until morning? If yes (laboured breathing, unmanageable pain, repeated collapse), tonight is right, whether that's an after-hours home vet or the emergency clinic. If your pet is settled and sleeping, a planned morning visit is often calmer for everyone, and cheaper. Ringing an after-hours vet to talk it through commits you to nothing; they triage these calls every night.

If no home vet can come tonight

Emergency clinics perform euthanasia with compassion at any hour. It's a meaningful part of their work, and they will not rush you. A home goodbye is worth wanting; it is not worth a night of suffering to get.

Common questions

Can I book an evening visit in advance?

Yes. Planned evening visits are common for households waiting on family to gather after work. Booking ahead usually costs less than a same-night call.

Is aftercare still available after hours?

Yes. The vet takes your pet into care overnight and the crematorium takes over next business day. Nothing about cremation or ashes changes.

Who actually answers at 10 pm?

Dedicated end-of-life services staff their own phones late; some run 24/7 lines. Our enquiry form marked "today" reaches the vets who are on.

Need someone this evening?

Send an enquiry marked "today" (after-hours vets triage end-of-life calls first), or find your city's page under find a vet.
