How many publish their prices

We took the 59 mobile vets and home euthanasia services we had already checked for our city guides (chosen before we looked at prices) and read each one's website: the homepage and up to five fee, pricing, euthanasia, aftercare or FAQ pages.

One in three publishes no prices at all. Most that do publish a single "from" figure: only one in five says what a euthanasia costs for your size of pet, and fewer than one in six publishes what an evening or weekend visit adds, even though that is often when families need them most.

National prices

"Typical" is the median of each service's lowest advertised price. "Lowest" and "highest" are the bottom and top of any published range. Weekday prices unless stated.

What this means for you

  • Budget about $417 for a weekday home euthanasia, and about $800 if you want an individual cremation with ashes returned. Communal cremation is closer to $148.
  • Ask for one all-in number: the visit, the euthanasia, sedation, any travel fee, the after-hours charge if it applies, and the cremation you want.
  • Evenings and weekends typically add about $100, and some services charge up to $220 more. If you can plan for a weekday, it costs less.
  • Larger dogs cost more: a typical $449 against $389 for a cat or small dog.
  • A service that does not publish prices is not necessarily dearer. Ring and ask; vets are used to the question.

More detail: what home euthanasia costs, cremation and aftercare, and after-hours visits.

How we did it

  • Only prices printed on the service's own website. No comparison sites, directories, surveys, insurers or crematoriums selling direct.
  • Two samples. The transparency figures use 59 services across 20 cities that we had already listed for our city guides before looking at prices. The price figures add services found by searching for published prices, 85 in total across Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Perth, Adelaide, the Gold Coast, Canberra and Hobart, plus the regional cities in the state table.
  • What we read. The homepage and up to five fee, pricing, euthanasia, aftercare or FAQ pages per service, in September 2026. Every price is recorded with the exact wording from the page.
  • Checks. Every recorded figure was matched against the quoted text, a random sample was re-checked against the live pages, and every lowest and highest figure was checked by hand.
  • Left out. Member-only prices, multi-pet packages, prices for rabbits and pocket pets, specialist consults, and bundled euthanasia and cremation packages. Per-kilometre travel rates are left out of the call-out row.
  • Typical means the median of each service's lowest advertised price. Multi-city services count once nationally and once in each city they serve.
